Bauxite Ore is one of the most important industrial minerals, and it being the aluminium ore, is the principal raw material for the production of alumina (aluminium oxide) through the Bayer process, which is the first step in aluminium production.

Bauxite is a mineral which can be described as a mixture of aluminium oxides and hydroxides. It has a MOHS hardness of 1-3 and specific gravity of 2,5-3,5 g/cm3. The primary ore minerals are gibbsite (alumina tri-hydrate), boehmite and diaspore (alumina monohydrates)

Bauxite is of great importance as it is used in aluminium production. Almost 90% of world bauxite is produced via open-pit mining and 85-90% of this production is consumed in aluminium and alumina production. Additionally, this mineral is used in chemistry, refractory, abrasive production, Calcium aluminate cement industries and in Iron & Steel production as a slag conditioner.

Bauxite may be very hard or as soft as mud and may occur as compacted earth (both friable and re-cemented), small balls (pisolites), or hollow, twig-like material (tubules). Its colours may be reddish-brown, but can also be buff, pink, yellow, tan, and white or any combination of these or depending on the type and concentration of iron minerals present. It also has a wide range of textures, but is typically dull to earthy in luster and can look like clay or soil.
